Thinking of becoming a Foster Carer?

There are more than 45,000 children in Australia who are living in out-of-home care and the need for Foster Carers has never been greater. You could be the Key in making a difference in giving a child a safe place to call home. Whether its one weekend a month or for a lifetime, we need Foster Carers who can open their hearts and their homes for a child or children in need.

We have some truly amazing Foster Carers from all types of households who have been fostering with Key Assets for many years. Listen to their fostering journeys.

Foster Care Rachel

Rachel’s has a passion for children and understands that some kids are not given the same start in life as others children so she decided to put her hand up to become a Foster Carer and support children to flourish and grow.

Starting as a Short Term and Respite Carer in 2010, Rachel got to be like the fun aunty for many children that came into her care.   Key Assets offered Rachel a lot of support in ongoing training and support group meetings which allowed her to connect with other carers, and work through and understand a range of behaviours that children can often display when they come into care.

“I thought coming into foster care I would be helping kids coming into care; but I ended up being so happy and so fulfilled knowing that I had made such a difference in a child’s life.  The most difficult part of being a Foster Carer is knowing the trauma that a child has been through.  All you want to do is take that trauma away from them and make it better .”

Foster children tend to be given up on way too many times and so they never learn to trust anybody.  All they need is for a person to tell them you can push me away, you can tell me your sad stories but I am still going to be here for you, I’m still going to love you and I’m still going to support you and we will get through this together. Anyone considering fostering should do it.

Foster Carers – Rob and Cathy

Dale has been a foster carer for many years and was a finalist for Carer of the Year at the 2019 Victorian Protecting Children Awards. Dale talks to Key Assets ambassador Mat Rogers about being a foster carer during the COVID-19 Lockdown.

COVID did have a lot of challenges but there was a lot of support not only from family and friends but also Key assets.  They were able to supply us with a social worker to come in and help a couple of the kids.  One of the biggest challenges is that you have to be humble enough to realise that you can’t do this on your own. You do need the extra help and support.  Once you have accepted these challenges it refocuses you into the direction you are going.  Its definitely good that the kids are going back to school now.  I’ve learnt not to take things personally, especially in lockdown. Coping with all that is going on the kids can get quite irritated with a lot of things but you have to put yourself in the mind of the child and what they are going through.

Foster Carer – Melinda

When Melinda and her family decided to become foster carers they wanted to give a child an amazing life with a great family; but what ended up happening through this process is the child that has come into their care has ended up being the gift, by making Melinda and her family more aware of so many beautiful things that already exist within their own family .

By the time a child comes into foster care they have already experienced trauma in their lives. Children coming into foster care need a person to believe in them and have patience with them until they can believe in themselves.

Training to become a Foster Carer with Key assets will help you understand how to work with a child while they are experiencing some big feelings.

Key assets offer 24/7 phone support, ongoing training and access to educational tools to help Foster Carers along the way.  If you believe that you can help a child flourish and grow, think about becoming a foster carer and be the Key in making a difference.
